£200m project 'to transform Montenegrin port'
01 September 2008Montenegro is set to become the "playground of the rich", with plans in place to transform the dilapidated port of Tivat into "the new Monaco", it has been claimed.
The Daily Mail reports the area is set to be revitalised by a £200 million project which will see it renamed Porto Montenegro.
Canadian Peter Munk, the head of mining company Barrick Gold, is behind the idea, which is being backed by investors such as Lord Rothschild, a friend of the Prince of Wales.
Mr Munk told the Sunday Times the port will cater for the mega-rich and house their large yachts.
He explained: "The boats are getting bigger and bigger and people are complaining that they can't find proper berths for their boats. That's not a problem in Tivat."
Meanwhile, the mountains and forests of Montenegro are attracting increasing numbers of travellers to the country.
Good transport links mean tourists can easily access the country from Croatia if they wish to incorporate a trip to Montenegro into their Croatian travel.
