Autumn 'is a great time to explore Dubrovnik'

A travel writer who "fell in love" with Dubrovnik back in the 1990s has told of his experiences after taking a holiday there this summer.

Alec Russell, penning a piece for the Financial Times, says he feared the "magic" of the city may have been lost since his last visit.

However, "I need not have fretted" he notes, explaining the same striking architecture and cultural masterpieces remain in place.

Mr Russell's one word of warning concerns those planning their Dubrovnik holiday, as he advises a visit in the middle of summer will not only be extremely hot but also very busy.

Indeed, the writer explains what should be a relaxing stroll around the city's walls can become an awkward shuffle.

He instead recommends autumn and spring as the best seasons in which to travel to Dubrovnik, meaning it is arguably a top spot to head for in the coming weeks.

Dubrovnik Airport this week welcomed its one millionth passenger of the year.
