Aviation targetted by environmental audit
28 August 2009The aviation industry is a target for political and environmental groups, according to one expert.
Gary Crichlow, aviation analyst at Ascend, was speaking after the Official Journal of the European Union ordered 3,500 airlines to submit reports pertaining to their CO2 emmissions.
If the airlines fail to produce the reports they could be banned from using airports such as the ones in Dubrovnik and Split in Croatia.
Tourism in Europe could be hit if the proposals to oust so many airlines from European travel hubs go ahead.
Mr Crichlow highlighted the reasons behind aviation being focused on.
He said: "Aircrafts are a high profile industry and it is also a growth industry so where you might find other sectors being able to reduce their emissions and dependence on fossil fuels by switching to alternatives, the aviation industry is locked in for the foreseeable future on fossil fuels."
The airlines in question have until the end of the month to publish their environmental credentials.
