Award-winning troupe put Croatian folk dancing on world map
03 September 2009One of Croatia's leading dance groups has helped boost the status of the nation's traditional folk dancing after winning a silver medal at a major arts festival.
The ensemble Jedinstvo, which means 'unity' in Croatian scooped the coveted medal at the 2009 International Festival of Folklore, which was held in the French city of Gijon over the final week of August.
The group, which is based in the historic city of Split, won the judges' praise following performances of two traditional Croat folk dances.
And while the troupe eventually lost out to a Bulgarian group, it remains one of Europe's leading folk ensembles, having been formed in 1919 and won numerous competitions over the years.
In addition to the Mediterranean influences, visitors enjoying a holiday in Croatia will also be able to hear the influences of the Balkans and Central Europe in the country's traditional music, with former US president George Bush's wife Laura Bush having been treated to a special folk performance in Zagreb in 2008.
