Book accommodation in Dubrovnik ahead of Festival of Oysters
16 February 2011Taking a holiday in Dubrovnik in March may be a good option for lovers of oysters, as a special celebration dedicated to the food is coming to the resort.
The Festival of Oysters is to be held on March 20th and will feature the story of the popular seafood with aphrodisiac qualities.
Oysters have a unique status in Dubrovnik, as they have been eaten there as a local delicacy since the days of the Dubrovnik Republic aristocrats, who feasted on them at renaissance meetings.
Eating the food while on holiday in Croatia is arguably one of the best times to do so, as many are plucked from the Adriatic Sea at Mali Ston – considered the cleanest waters in the world.
The oysters found in the Bay of Mali Ston are of the shallow variety, meaning they are the most valuable and sought after.
Visitors can travel from the UK to Dubrovnik with airlines such as British Airways, Croatia Airlines and easyJet.
