Bosnia becoming top ski resort

Bosnia's ski resorts have seen a boost in visitor numbers over the past few years as neighbouring Croatia becomes a more popular destination.

A writer in the LA Times says the Jahorina resort just outside Sarajevo is cheap, has good food and is an adventure.

Peter Frick-Wright says the resort's mountain has 12.5 miles of trails down a vertical drop of 1,932 feet and ten ski lifts which can move up to 7,500 skiers per hour.

He says the resort offered him personal service which would not have been seen in other, bigger resorts, with one worker saying "people here are polite".

Another asset of skiing in Bosnia is the food on offer, the writer states, which consists of "belly-busting portions of slow-cooked meat and potatoes and cabbage".

Mr Frick-Wright predicts that soon the resort will compete with the budget ones in Austria and Slovenia.

The Independent has recently advised skiers looking for a bargain holiday to head to Eastern Europe this winter.
