Carnival to take place in Rijeka
25 November 2008The annual International Carnival of Rijeka is to take place early next year and will involve ancient folklore elements and mythology.
It is a 100-year-old tradition which is a blend of customs and attracts carnival groups, spectators and guests from around Croatia and abroad.
Customs at the event include the making of ugly masks which scare away evil forces and the calling of spring and celebrating the birth of new life.
The event begins with the Carnival Queen Contest and the opening ceremony where the mayor gives the keys of the city to the Master of the Carnival.
Before the event finale - the International Carnival Parade - concerts, exhibitions, parties and performances take place for people to watch and get involved in.
The event is one of the largest festivals in Europe and hosts more than a thousand masks and over 100,000 spectators.
Rijeka will also host the swimming event the European Short Course Championships which will take place from December 11th to 14th.
