It is home to a plethora of iconic ancient landmarks, from the city walls of Dubrovnik to Diocletian's Palace in Split.
Now, Guide2Croatia has advised those planning a holiday in Croatia to head to the nation's castles, which it described as "wonderful".
The country is said to be the most eastern of all those in Europe that own castles, with 180 of the approximately 1,000 that existed in the 18th century still standing.
It named Bezanec, in the hills above Pregrada, as one of its favourites, citing its classic style and monuments as reasons to visit.
The website also put forward Trakoscan, situated in the north-west of Croatia, as a potential day trip destination, stating it is the most beautiful of all the castles in the country.
Dubrovnik, one of Croatia's most popular destinations, is also home to a castle.
