Croatia a favourite for EU holidaymakers
24 March 2009Croatia is among the favourite holiday destinations for travellers from the European Union (EU), it has been discovered.
Official statistics published by the European Commission as part of its Eurobarometer show that the Balkan country is one of the top three non-EU locations to visit.
Alongside Turkey and the US, the survey of EU residents highlighted Croatia as a favourite holiday spot among Europeans, perhaps due to its pleasant climate and array of tourist attractions.
The report read: "Non-EU destinations
gained some popularity, probably due to the increasingly favourable exchange rates for euro area travellers to many destinations."
It also noted that while over half of tourists preferred spending time in "conventional" destinations, almost a third opted for a more adventurous travel experience, which could include trips to Croatian hotspots such as Dubrovnik and Split.
Last year, more than 9.3 million foreign citizens visited Croatia, according to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics.
