Croatia celebrates Jewish heritage with festival

Visitors taking a break in Croatia have been enjoying one of Europe's newest festivals aimed at celebrating Jewish culture.

Taking place in the town of Opatija in the region of Istria, the festival ran up to September 1st and saw visitors and locals alike treated to a host of lectures, concerts and performances.

Among the highlights of the third international festival included concerts by the American pianist Yefim Bronfman and the singer Esma Redzepova, who hails from Macedonia.

In addition the week-long event, which is called Bejhad, will feature readings on Jewish culture and a series of exhibitions and films, including a screening of 'Ordinary People', taking place across a number of venues in the historic town.

In the 19th century, Opatija emerged as a favourite tourist destination among rich Austrians, while its coastal location and vibrant heritage ensure that the town remains a favourite among international visitors enjoying a Croatian villa holiday.
