Croatia could enter EU in 2010
03 September 2009Croatia could be set to enter the European Union (EU) in the early part of 2010, it has been revealed.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Dow Jones newswire has reported that officials from the Baltic state and the European Commission noted that the delay over Croatia's entry could soon come to an end.
Several items were listed as conditions to Croatia's entry including the overhaul of dockyards and it is believed by Croatian chief negotiator Vladimir Drobnjak that these could be met next year.
"I can say with confidence we have entered the final stage of the process," he told the news provider.
He went on to say that he believed that Croatia's agricultural producers could compete well in the European market.
"If your product is competitive then you can survive nicely regardless of the size of the market. If the product is not competitive, you will perish," Mr Drobnjak added.
Croatian tourism could see a boost if the country were to enter the EU, as well as an increased flow of trade.
