Croatia fall at last hurdle in handball championship
02 February 2009Sports fans across Croatia were faced with disappointment after their national handball team fell at the last hurdle at the World Championship.
Last night's (February 1st) final saw Croatia take on France in an exhilarating match-up in Zagreb, which - despite their best efforts - saw the home side fall 24-19.
There was nothing between both sides until the closing minutes of the tie when France broke the 18-18 deadlock and ultimately claimed victory.
Coach of the French national team, Claude Onesta, told the Associated Press: "There's no secret, it's the talent of the players, the spirit.
"We dominated this competition, and even this match, it was us who controlled the game."
Croatia has been one of the favourites take gold at the tournament following their winning performances in 1996, 2003 and 2004.
The race for third place was won by Poland as they defeated Denmark 31-23 in a thrilling encounter to take the bronze medal.
