Croatia holiday 'can inspire healthy and tasty diet'

People taking a holiday in Croatia this year have an opportunity to enjoy the benefits of a healthy and delicious diet, should they stick to local dishes.

Dr Carina Norris Rnutr, a nutrition consultant, said countries with a Mediterranean coast tend to share characteristics when it comes to eating.

Items such as nuts, olive oil, seafood and fruit and vegetables are particularly common in meals in the region.

"Population studies have shown a link between this pattern of eating and a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, heart attacks and strokes, certain cancers, as well as obesity and type 2 diabetes," stated Dr Norris.

She added fish – which is often caught from the waters of the Adriatic Sea when served in Croatia – is rich in polyunsaturated fats, which help to maintain cholesterol levels.

Those looking for a taste of the country may like to book a holiday in Croatia for April 16th-17th, when an event known as Fishermen to their Town is held, offering tasty fish dishes to visitors.
