Croatia holiday: Zagreb festival to celebrate 'urban art'

Holidaymakers who opt to stay in Croatian villas or apartments this May can avail of a popular international and multimedia festival in the country's capital.

Organisers of Zagreb's UrbanFestival explained that the event exists to celebrate modern art in "public inner city spaces".

Its core objective is to bring more art to city life and to "intensify" the interaction between the city and its inhabitants, with this year's particular theme for budding artists entitled "How We Regret".

"By deliberately stepping outside the ivory towers of art galleries and theatres, we have been attempting to widen the scope of our activity and bring to life the public space as a place of coexistence and juxtaposition of divergent points of view," said a statement from officials.

The document added that projects from prospective participants should be "open and interactive", as well as socially committed.

Furthermore, all selected artists are obligated to go to Zagreb for a research visit.

Originally set up in 2001, UrbanFestival is focussed on the public, making it an ideal option for both seasoned eastern European visitors and individuals experiencing Croatia travel for the first time.
