Croatia holidays 'becoming more popular with locals'

Holidays in Croatia appear to have won a brand new fan base – the country's native residents.

According to tourist operators, more Croatians are set to reject foreign vacations in favour of a stay in accommodation in places such as Dubrovnik and Split, reported the Croatian Times.

The newspaper quoted Adriatica.net's Boris Teski, who said that bookings among locals for holidays in the country were 25 per cent up in May.

Kristijan Grzetic of the same website revealed that the total growth for both May and June is expected to be between 20 and 30 per cent, in comparison to last year's figures.

He admitted that while some Croatians are still heading abroad, many are choosing to stay and explore the beauty of their homeland – as well as the excellent value for money it offers.

Data released by the Central Bureau of Statistics, reported by Business and cited by the Croatian Times, showed there was an 18.4 per cent hike in arrivals in Croatia over the first four months of 2011.
