Croatia is the 'unspoiled gem of the Adriatic'

While growing numbers of international travellers are waking up to the delights of Croatian villas, it's still possible to explore a number of unspoiled parts of the country, one expert has stated.

Advising readers of the Chicago Tribune on the attractions of Croatia, which in itself is "an unspoiled delight on the Adriatic", travel writer Karen Torme Olsen singled out the island of Vis as an ideal example of how the country has yet to be ruined by mass tourism, unlike several of its European neighbours.

Indeed, she has revealed that the unspoiled nature of the island is part of its charm, with the pace of life slowing considerably, allowing those visitors staying in Croatia on the mainland the opportunity to relax even further and gain an insight into the traditional way of life in the country.

As well as simply sitting back and enjoying the view of the Adriatic from the numerous bars and cafes of the main town of Vis, tourists are also able to swim in warm and calm waters and visit some of the many archeological digs constantly taking place on the island.

The island of Vis was first settled by Dionysius the Elder in the fourth century BC, later establishing itself as an independent city state before eventually becoming part of Croatia.
