Americans are being urged to make their currency go further with a European holiday in Croatia, reports Travel Smart.

This eastern European country has not experienced "over the top" development and is "endlessly fascinating", according to the travel expert.

Travelling in the shoulder season and basing yourself in self catering accommodation in Croatia, preferably in a small town or rural area, are also ways to make your holiday budget go further.

Spring in Istria is a wonderful time of year, when the flowers and butterflies are emerging and the wild asparagus starts sprouting.

Accommodation in Istria and other regions located inland is often 25 per cent cheaper than on the coast, according to TravelSmart.
