Croatia steals tourism from France's top spot

France is battling for its holiday top spot against competition from Croatia, it has been claimed.

Despite 82 million tourists travelling to the country last year, France fears its tourism crown may be slipping, reports France24.

New destinations on the market, such as Croatia, are posing a threat to France as tourists seek new, cheap holiday locations.

The country has started a new campaign to lure new tourists from other countries.

As the credit crunch continues more people are looking for a cheaper holiday destination, with the traditional eurozone being avoided for the strong currency rates.

This was reinforced with the tourism ministry in Croatia having recently revealed tourism levels are expected to stay the same as last year and may increase this summer.

It seems the economic situation is not putting people off travelling abroad altogether, with a poll from Kayak.co.uk having revealed 60 per cent are still planning a getaway.
