Croatia takes another step towards EU membership

Croatian and European Union officials began talks this week in Brussels on the next round of policy negotiations leading toward EU membership.

This puts Croatia in the leading position to become the 28th member state of the EU.

The EU requires that 35 policy chapters be successfully negotiated before membership is granted and the official signing ceremony this week means that 16 chapters are now under negotiation.

Accession talks started in October 2005 and good progress has been made.

European membership would be a significant boost to the Croatian economy and promote its already burgeoning tourism industry.

People going on holiday in Croatia would be able to travel freely within Europe as well as spend the common currency.
