Croatia talks progress for EU entry

Those hoping to stay in villas in Croatia on holiday in the coming years may be interested to know that the country is currently finalising its EU membership.

Although both Turkey and Croatia launched their appeals in 2005, it is believed that the latter is currently making progress in meeting the requirements at a faster pace and could become the 28th member of the union by 2012.

Vladimir Drobnjak, Croatia's chief negotiator, was in Brussels on February 19th to open discussions over two more chapters – on fisheries and the environment - and plans to begin the remaining five by July.

Amanda Paul, writing for Sunday's Zaman, commented: "So, it really seems that Croatia is getting to the end of the EU road, which should be positive for the whole [of the] region."

The most recent countries to become member states of the EU are Bulgaria and Romania, which joined on January 1st 2007.
