Croatian-Hungarian road bridge connection 'planned'
24 July 2008A 170-metre road bridge is set to be constructed in the north-east of Croatia, linking Kotoriba with the Hungarian border town of Murakeresztur, it has been revealed.
Lajos Pavlicz, mayor of the town, told Hungarian news agency MTI the new border bridge will be built over the Mura river "in the coming years", caboodle.hu reports.
The website states the project is currently at the licensing stage, with construction expected to start in 2011 or 2012 and cost eight million euros (£6.3 million).
It will add to the existing rail connection which has linked the two areas for decades - while drivers have been forced to take a 50 km detour.
According to the website, border and customs control facilities are not in the pipeline as Croatia is expected to have made advances towards its accession to the European Union by the time construction nears completion.
The road bridge is likely to be beneficial to Croatian tourism, with many people travelling to the country over the Hungarian border in the last two weekends.
