Croatian beaches 'remarkable and unique'
09 January 2009The sparkling sea and beaches along the Adriatic coast have been lauded as "remarkable and unique" by the Croatian government.
The declaration was made as part of a prelude to the ministry of environmental protection's scheme to maintain the superb quality of the country's coastal stretches.
In particular, the picturesque islands that dot the Adriatic are to be made a high priority for natural preservation.
The ministry said in a statement: "The Adriatic Sea and the coastal area of the Republic of Croatia are remarkable and unique due to their diversity and wealth of life, the purity and transparency of the sea and the . dynamic landscape."
It added that the government was prioritising the protection of the "priceless resources and natural features" of the ocean and its eco-systems.
One of the most popular tourist destinations located on the Adriatic coast is the city of Dubrovnik, which in 1979 was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
