Croatian cities given chance to become green capitals
23 May 2008Zagreb and Split could be put forward for the European Green Capital Award after the European Commission invited cities with a population of over 200,000 to enter the competition.
The award has been set up to encourage European cities to become more attractive and healthy, with locations in countries throughout the European Union (EU), candidate nations like Croatia and areas within the European Economic Area all encouraged to take part.
Applications are now being sought and a jury will decide the winning cities for 2010 and 2011 later this year.
Launching the competition at the committee of regions in Brussels yesterday, European commissioner Stavros Dimas said he hoped it would be an incentive for local governments and authorities to improve the quality of life for those living in cities.
He continued: "Many cities are already committed to improving protection of their environment: I am confident that this award will encourage many more to follow suit."
According to findcroatia.com, the country is an eco-friendly travel destination which includes eight national parks and ten nature reserves.
