Croatian doctors pioneer treatment

Doctor's on Croatia have performed the first laparoscopic surgery on a baby in the 15 years the procedure has been used.

The Osijek Hospital was home to the first operation of this kind on a 15-month-old baby, who was being treated for a life-threatening bowel condition, the Croatian Times reports.

Surgery on the child was successful and the next day the baby was well enough to eat and drink.

According to chiefs, the hospital is aiming to become a clinical centre and so it is constantly updating its equipment and methods.

Zeljko Vranjes, chief of the medical centre, says this has been aided by funding from the Ministry of Health and Social Care, which has allowed them to also have top-class personnel and technology, the source reports.

In this case surgeons opted for laparoscopic surgery as a more traditional, invasive operation would have involved a large slit in the abdomen.

Doctors in Rijeka, Croatia recently successfully operated on ten heart defect children in ten days, the source reports.
