Croatian government to re-assess smoking ban
28 August 2009Croatian health minister Darko Milinovic has revealed that the government is reviewing the smoking ban in public places after a number of complaints.
Restaurant and bar patrons in the Baltic state have been enjoying a smoke-free environment since the ban was introduced in May.
However, a number of establishments have reported a drop in business of up to 80 per cent as smokers are deciding to stay in their homes or holiday villas to smoke.
According to the Croatian Times, smoking in bars and restaurants is set to be allowed but stricter laws on ventilation will replace them.
Mr Milinovic said: "I still believe that the losses restaurant owners reported have mostly to do with the economic crisis and not the ban on smoking," as reported by Earth Times.
A number of cultural events are attracting tourists to Croatia this summer, regardless of whether or not they smoke, with the Vukovar Film Festival currently underway.
