Croatian holiday could be passport to 'oyster capital of the world'
04 February 2010Seafood lovers have been advised to book a Croatian holiday, after the country's national tourism board revealed it features one of the world's oldest oyster farms.
Ston on the Peljesac Peninsula in southern Croatia has been an oyster hotspot since Roman times and has a strong reputation for being the Balkans' best.
People who travel to Ston - or nearby Dubrovnik - will also be able to sample the Ostrea Edulis variety, which is found only in Croatia and said to be firmer and more richly flavoured than Atlantic oysters.
The region is also famed for its wine - such as Postup and Dingac - which could complement the oysters perfectly.
Finally, the board advises those on a Croatian holiday in Ston to "walk it off along the secluded sandy Divina beach to the north of the town".
Dubrovnik was recently named by The Guardian as the second most romantic holiday destination in Europe.
