Croatian holiday could be perfect stop on older person's gap year

Travelling to Croatia may be of interest to the growing number of older people taking gap years.

People aged over 65 are just as adventurous as youngsters and are taking advantage of their free time by jetting off around the globe, according to a travel expert.

Such people want to see places that were once "off the beaten track", says Lauren Mackay, marketing manager for Real Gap.

Those places could include Croatia, which has enjoyed a boom in tourism over the last decade as travellers rush to experience its long, sandy beaches and reliable supply of sun.

"Some of our older customers have also been inspired and encouraged by their children's gap years – they want to see and experience the places that they have heard so much about," explains Ms Mackay.

According to two bloggers writing for the Huffington Post last week, Croatia established itself as one of the world's top ten holiday destinations in 2010.
