Croatian holiday on Dalmatian coast 'is one of Europe's hidden gems'

Travellers looking for something off the beaten track should book a holiday in Croatia and head to the Dalmatian coast, one expert has said.

Writing for the Daily Mail, travel journalist Paul Oswell included the destination in his list of 'hidden gems' in Europe, recommending it over more familiar Croatian locations like Dubrovnik and Zagreb.

He advised checking out the region's many beaches, as well as the Unesco World Heritage site of Plitvice Lakes National Park, which he compared to the UK' Lake District – containing 16 lakes and dramatic waterfalls.

"At 70 metres, the awesome and quirkily named Veliki Slap is the tallest waterfall, slicing through the dense woodland that is home to an array of local wildlife that includes deer, bears and wolves," the expert explained.

The Croatian National Tourist Board recently recommended Dubrovnik - "the most beautiful jewel of Croatia's cultural heritage" – as one of the best places to visit for those on holiday in the country.
