Croatian holiday 'particularly popular amongst Germans'

Despite the global contraction of the travel industry during the recession, the number of Germans taking a Croatian holiday increased by two per cent.

Croatia's director of tourism Zlatko Dezeljin says the surge in popularity is due to the high quality of hotels and Croatian villas compared with other European countries, according to Guide2Croatia.

The two per cent rise in German tourists translated into a four per cent rise in the number of nights spent in the country - many of which may have been in a Croatian villa.

Croatia has made significant investment in top-quality accommodation during recent years, the website states.

The decision of budget airlines - such as easyJet - to open up a number of new routes to Croatia may also have been a factor in the improved travel figures.

German carrier Lufthansa last month announced it is to begin operating flights between Split and Dusseldorf.
