Croatian port gets glamorous renovation
07 October 2009Visitors to Rijeka, Croatia, will be able to take advantage of the town's new maritime passenger terminal on their next visit.
The £13 million development was opened yesterday (October 6th) by Croatian prime minister Jadranka Kosor.
People travelling by sea to and from the historic town on Croatia's northern Adriatic coast will benefit from the latest technology and new cafes, bars and restaurants.
Rijeka Port Authority head Bojan Hlaca said the terminal will be able to cope with twice as many people as it did previously.
He revealed the authority's target is to increase passenger numbers from 200,000 a year to 500,000.
Work on the passenger terminal is just one part of the Rijeka Gateway scheme which plans to create 3,000 jobs.
The prime minister said she was proud that Croatia continues to commit resources to improving infrastructure even in the difficult financial climate.
Renovation of the port comes just weeks after the new director of Zagreb Airport announced there will be significant improvements to its runway and terminal facilities.
