Croatian president praises Istria's rich history and culture
26 August 2009Croatia's president, Stjepan Mesic, has praised his home region of Istria, suggesting that it offers tourists the best glimpse into the country's culture and history.
The premier made the comments as he visited the town of Barban, located in the east of the region, in order to attend the annual equestrian tournament.
He told reporters and members of the public that the growing popularity of Croatian holidays is providing a much-needed boost for the national economy.
According to emportal.rs. Mr Mesic put the popularity of Croatia down to the fact that international holidaymakers enjoy visiting a country with a fascinating history that is "endowed with abundant natural beauties".
Furthermore, he stated his personal belief that, despite its turbulent past, Istria "has never lost its Croatian identity" and in fact is one of the best places to head to when enjoying a cultural break in the country.
The town of Barban is located just above the better-known Pula, and its equestrian tournament, which dates back to 1686, attracts thousands of tourists and locals each year.
