Croatian prime minister 'thanks' tourism industry
09 September 2009Croatia's prime minister has claimed that the country's tourism industry is holding up fairly well despite the worldwide recession.
Though many feared that tourism would be hard hit in the country, Jadranka Kosor said that Croatia had nearly 49 million overnight stays in the last eight months, AFP reports.
Although the figure for the amount of tourists was down by 0.2 per cent, the fall is not as bad as had been expected.
"I would like to thank all those who made their contribution
to everyone who works in [the] tourism industry," he was quoted by the news provider as saying in a HINA report.
Croatia has fast become a popular tourist destination in recent years thanks to a combination of good weather, high quality accommodation and some of eastern Europe's most beautiful scenery.
Famous spots such as Split and Zagreb are now very popular and many celebrities have been spotted on the Adriatic coast, including singer Beyonce and her husband Jay-Z.
