Croatian prime minister visits UK

Ivo Sanader, the Croatian prime minister, has been in the UK for discussions with his British counterpart Gordon Brown.

A Strategic Partnership for 2008/2009 has been launched by the two politicians, which encourages a close relationship between the two countries and strengthens cooperation.

Croatia's accession to the European Union (EU) was among other topics of discussion for the pair, with Mr Brown stating his support for the country and expressing hope it will be ready to conclude negotiations next year.

Both Mr Brown and Mr Sanader said they share a vision of a "stable and prosperous region of south-east Europe firmly anchored in the EU and Nato".

A spokesman for the British prime minister told assembled reporters said that suggestions the talks held significance for Croatia's EU hopes were "hypothetical" and speculation "would not be fruitful".

He added the meeting had been long-scheduled but did admit discussions over the success of the Croatian football team at the European Championships were likely to have taken place.
