Croatian scientist challenges Alzheimer's assumptions
15 October 2008People with Alzheimer's disease forget anxiety and worry causing their high blood pressure to fall, according to a Croatian scientist.
Dr Sven Kurbel, from the Osijek medical faculty in Croatia, discovered when a patient's memory fails they suffer from hypotension, which is low blood pressure.
It has previously been thought the cognitive problems experienced by those with Alzheimer's disease were as a result of low blood pressure.
Dr Kurbel says if his hypothesis is correct it could have a significant effect on the treatment of conditions such as metabolic syndrome.
"An important question is would reduction of stress exposure help diminish the risk of getting hypertension or the syndrome in the years to come," he added.
If the conclusions of Dr Kurbel's study are confirmed by further tests it will lead to changes in the way doctors treat patients and the drugs they prescribe.
Croatian neuropathologist Goran Simic was recently awarded the accolade of best neuropathologist after discovering the spinal muscular-atrophy mechanism.
