Croatian wins 'best neuropathologist' award
08 October 2008A Croatian neuropathologist who discovered the spinal muscular-atrophy mechanism has been given the accolade of best neuropathologist.
Goran Simic was awarded the title by Acta Neuropathalogica magazine, which specialises in neuropathology and reviewed his work in its September edition.
The reward and medal will be presented to the scientist on October 10th at the annual neuropathology and neuroanatomy conference in Wurzburg, Germany.
Mr Simic said he had not expected to win the award and could hardly believe it when the magazine editor told him he was in the final round of candidates.
"I am very proud that my work has been published in such a prestigious magazine when thousands of neuropathologists are trying to be in it," he said.
The neuropathologist has also been appointed as a member of the editorial board and is the first scientist to appear of the cover of the magazine.
Spinal muscular atrophy is caused by the mutation of a gene and can be inherited by a child if both parents are carriers.
