Croatia's EU talks progress

A new impetus has been seen in Croatia's European Union (EU) discussions, according to the European commission's envoy in Zagreb.

He told Reuters "lots of optimism and energy" has been put into talks by the Commission, Croatia and member states.

It is claimed progression since March is making the prospect of Croatia achieving accession to the EU in 2009 increasingly likely.

Vincent Degert, the commission's envoy in Zagreb, told the news agency he is optimistic Croatia will follow through on proposals to conclude talks next year.

He added: "There is a lot of energy, lots of motivation in the Croatian administration… I don't think we should foresee delays at this stage.

"We have to try to meet the deadlines, meet the targets."

Croatian deputy prime minister Damir Polanec recently met with European employment commissioner Vladimir Spidla for talks on the Joint Assessment of Employment Priorities.

The main strengths and weaknesses of the Croatian labour market were discussed and Mr Spidla declared afterwards that Croatia has reached "a good level of alignment" with EU law on employment and social policy.
