Dubrovnik handed best port award

The Croatian tourist hotspot of Dubrovnik has been handed an award for the Mediterranean's best port.

According to the city's port authority, the prize is based on the opinions of Spanish tourists, of whom a sizeable number visit Croatia each year.

Croatian ambassador to Spain, Neven Pelicaric was on hand in Malaga to receive the award from the city's chamber of commerce president, Jeronimo Perez Casero.

The city has perhaps proved a hit with travellers from Spain and the rest of the world alike rep due to its alluring combination of cultural attractions and pleasant climate.

Among Dubrovnik's most popular experiences are the Lovrijenac Tower, the Church of St Blasius and its stunning harbour, as well as the year festival held during the summer.

Figures published by the Croatian Statistics Bureau last month revealed that the number of visitors from Spain rose to almost 170,000 during 2008.
