Dubrovnik "is most beautiful jewel" to be enjoyed on Croatian holiday

Dubrovnik - "the most beautiful jewel of Croatia's cultural heritage" - has been recommended as one of the top places to visit by the Croatian National Tourist Board.

Luza Square, which is the city's most popular meeting point, its ancient monasteries and Sponza Palace are all cited as top tourist hotspots.

Dubrovnik is a city in which there is something to suit everybody - with its reputation as Croatia's hottest location pleasing sun-lovers, while its medieval walls and buildings intrigue those with an eye for the past.

"The main sacral buildings of the Old City are set around Luza Square - the church of St Blasius - patron saint of Dubrovnik - and the Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary," according to the board.

For people on Croatian holidays wishing to venture further afield than the city's boundaries, Dubrovnik is surrounded by lush, green countryside and miles of coastline, sprinkled with its fair share of historic structures and sights.

Dubrovnik was recently voted by the Guardian as the second-best destination in Europe for couples to spend a romantic break.
