Dubrovnik opens new Natural History Museum
20 March 2009Dubrovnik has opened its new Natural History Museum in a move which could boost tourism to the Adriatic resort.
The institution, which in its previous incarnation was famous for its ornithological collection, was inaugurated by the city's mayor earlier this week.
Originally opened in 1872, the museum has had a troubled history, which saw some of its artefacts destroyed during a temporary move to Zagreb.
The Croatian Times wrote: "One part of the collection was destroyed during the move, but the rest has great significance for Croatia because it is rare and dates from the end of the 19th century."
The publication added that the collection had previously been housed at Zagreb's Natural History Museum, before being returned six years ago in preparation for Dubrovnik's new establishment.
Travellers from the UK interested in seeing the city's latest cultural attraction will be pleased to know that British Airways is increasing flight numbers between London and Dubrovnik this summer.
