Economist picks up Miss Universe Croatia gong
02 March 2009A 20-year-old economist has landed the prestigious award of Miss Universe Croatia, following a close-run contest.
Split resident Sarah Cosic picked up first prize in the contest - which was held in Opatija - after beating off close rivals Katarina Banic and Tamara Mehremovic.
For her trouble, Miss Cosic was given a new Mitsubishi Colt and a cash reward of 10,000 kuna (£1,220).
Ms Cosic told Javno, a Croatian news site: "I'm still shaking, I'm very excited, this is something great. It will take me two days to become fully aware of what just happened."
The competition's runner-up, Ms Banic, told the publication that she was "sorry" for missing out on first-place, but considered coming in second a "great success".
Located in the far north-west of Croatia on the Adriatic coast, Opatija is a popular summer resort for travellers which benefits from a warm, seasonable climate.
