Enjoy fine local wine on holiday in Dubrovnik
30 September 2010Some people may not be aware a holiday in Dubrovnik takes them to the heart of one of Croatia's finest wine-making regions.
The city's tourist board explains the nearby Peljesac Peninsula is home to some of the most-coveted grapes in the south of the country, which can be used to make Plavac Mali wine.
Plavac Mali grapes are grown on the slopes close to the Dalmatian coast and are given a boost by the year-round glare of the warm Mediterranean sun.
Among the types of wine produced in and around the coastal resort are Plavac, Dingac and Postup, all of which could be enjoyed by those travelling to Dubrovnik for a break.
There may also be the opportunity to taste Dubrovnik Malvasija, which is known in the region as the nectar of the gods and is sipped by local aristocrats.
Earlier this year, the Croatian wine Grasevina Goldberg from 2008 scooped the top prize at the Vinalies Internationales ceremony in Paris.
