For students on vacation Croatian prison is home
22 July 2009For most people on vacation Croatian villas and apartments might provide the ideal accommodation.
However, recent visiting students from Indiana found on their vacation Croatia's medium-security prison at Turopolje was to be called home.
They were staying in the prison to experience life as a convict in Croatia - and found it to be more pleasant than in the US.
Brittny Downing, a graduate student in criminology from Vincennes, says: "I liked that the Croatian prison systems were strong on human rights."
Ljiljana Miksaj-Todorovic, chair of the department of criminology at the University of Zagreb, adds that the students had a lot to learn.
"In the Croatian prison system prisoners are still names - not numbers," she explains.
A former prison in Turopolje now forms one of the area's tourist attractions, the Turopolje Museum.
The museum website reveals that the ground floor of its building previously held convicts, but now welcomes visitors to the region.
