Gastro-tourists could head for Croatia

The increasing trend towards gastro-holidays could mean a boost for Croatian tourism, given the prominence of the nation's wine.

Holidays with gastronomic offerings have been rising in popularity of late, according to Jonathan Cudworth, director of product management at Expedia.co.uk for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

He said: "We have seen a steady increase in demand for 'gastro holidays,' with people wanting more from their getaways by booking experiences such as wine tours and cookery courses."

Research by travelsupermarket.com also suggests that food and drink are becoming more important elements of travel, especially for Britons.

A total of 3.3 million UK tourists would opt out of visiting a holiday destination if they believed they wouldn't like the local food, according to the data.

Having recently won eight gold medals at the Decanter World Wine Awards, Croatia is now on the map as a producer of quality drinks and could be one of the countries that benefits from the increased interest in fine produce.
