Heroes of Dubrovnik to be honoured at ceremony
27 October 2009Visitors to Croatia interested in the country's history may want to attend a special ceremony to remember the Libertas convoy.
Libertas was a group of ships and boats, led by a vessel named Slavija, which sailed from Rijeka to Dubrovnik to help stop the destruction of the ancient southern city, reports the Croatian Times.
The event went some way to helping Croatia achieve independence in 1991.
Croatian president Stjepan Mesic, who was aboard Slavija, will speak at the ceremony on October 30th - the 18th anniversary of Libertas.
And French foreign minister Bernard Kouchner - who at the time of Libertas was a humanitarian worker who spent ten days in Dubrovnik - will receive a medal for supporting the city in its hour of need.
The two international figures will be joined by dozens of Croats who boarded fishing boats and tourist ferries to rush to Dubrovnik.
Croatia celebrated the 18th anniversary of its independence on October 8th.
