Holiday in Croatia for carnival fun

An eagerly anticipated carnival is coming to Samobor and could be attended by those on holiday in Croatia at the time.

The town, located just west of Zagreb, is described by the Croatian National Tourist Board as a "rampant manifestation" featuring spirits and ancient traditions.

It also notes the destination is a "carnival centre", where the celebrations completely take over everyday life.

Thousands of masks, lights, songs and dances are enjoyed by locals and visitors alike, while the Prince of the Carnival is put to trial.

This is arguably the central act of the festival, with large crowds turning out in the central square to witness the performance.

It is tradition that the anger, misery and sorrow felt by those watching is taken out on the lead character.

Samobor's carnival kicks off on February 15th, while the resorts of Dubrovnik and Rijeka are also due to host similar events this winter.
