Holiday in north Croatia to taste 'best chestnuts in the world'
19 October 2010A chestnut festival that lasts for the rest of the month is underway and may be of interest to people planning a holiday in Croatia.
The country's official tourism board explains the event, which is taking place in the Lovran area, features produce of a quality that is "known to be among the highest in the world".
A variety of chestnut found in the region is the result of hybridisation between local nuts and those brought over from the Far East.
With the food the most famous association to the town of Lovran, its residents spend three consecutive weekends each October celebrating it, the first of which takes place in the resort itself.
The following two, which could be attended by people who book a holiday in Croatia over the next few days, are held in nearby villages and feature traditional chestnuts roasted and seasoned in a variety of ways.
Lovran is located close to Opatija and Rijeka in the northern part of the Dalmatian coast, both of which could also be visited as part of a break in the area.
