Hydroplanes 'to transport Croatia holidaymakers to islands'
06 April 2011Tourists enjoying a break on the Dalmatian coast this summer will be able to quickly and easily journey to some of Croatia's islands thanks to a new hydroplane service.
According to the Croatian Times, citing a report by Slobodna Dalmacija, the project is being jointly organised by a native firm and a German counterpart.
It will see hydroplanes link the major cities of Split and Dubrovnik with the islands of Korcula, Hvar, Lastovo and Vis and some of the northern resorts are also due to be included.
The news source quoted European Coastal Airlines chief Klaus Dieter Martin, who said the first services might be in operation as early as this summer.
He added those behind the project have been backed by Croatia's deputy prime minister Domagoj Milosevic and minister Djuro Popijac, who believe it to be "of great national significance for Croatia".
Gill Charlton, writing for the Daily Telegraph, recently said island hopping is one of the pleasures of a holiday in Croatia.
