Iconic Zagreb venue wins award for its structure
10 November 2009Tourists may wish to book a Croatian villa and take in a show, sports event or concert at Arena Zagreb - a multi-purpose indoor hall which has won a design award.
It won the best structural prize at the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona last week, reports the Croatian Times.
Arena Zagreb triumphed because of its "simple, elegant and efficient structural concept - the external inward leaning ribs or columns, braced by a ring beam, supporting the suspended roof."
The best structural award has never been given before, meaning the centre in the Croatian capital will go down as its first winner.
More than 600 projects from 81 countries competed for prizes at the lavish ceremony in Catalunya.
Winning the award may make visitors to Croatia more aware of the stunning arena and tempt them into booking tickets for an event.
Last month a dance centre reopened in Zagreb after a £4.5 million facelift.
