Increase in number of travellers to Croatia

The number of people travelling to Croatia during the first eight months of the year is up on the corresponding time in 2009, new figures show.

Between January and August, some 8.2 million visitors arrived in the country, with a total of 51.7 million nights spent in accommodation in Croatia between them, reports Agence France-Presse.

"Compared with the [same period] last year the number of overnight stays increased [by] six per cent and the number of (tourist) arrivals three per cent," prime minister Jadranka Kosor says.

Meanwhile, tourism minister Damir Bajs predicts another two million people will opt for a holiday in Croatia by December 31st.

Tourism is a key part of the nation's economy, the news source notes, so a surge in its popularity with jet-setters may be welcomed.

Earlier this week, the Post Office noted the Croatian kuna was its best-selling foreign currency during the summer months.
