Japanese exhibition arrives in Rijeka
05 March 2009Travellers to Rijeka this month may be in for more of a cultural experience than they bargained for.
From this week, visitors to the coastal resort will be able to view an exhibition of Japanese hina dolls at the city's museum.
Coinciding with Japan's own doll festival, the showcase celebrates the tradition of displaying porcelain and silk emperor and empress dolls as a way of cleansing the family environment of negative elements.
Despite their roots in ancient culture, the hina dolls are more frequently used as goodwill gestures and gifts in present day Japan.
The event was opened by the Japanese ambassador to Croatia, Tetsuhisa Shirakawa, alongside Rijeka's mayor Vojko Obersnel and a number of invited guests, the Croatian Times reported.
The exhibition began on Wednesday (March 4th) and is due to run until March 17th.
Last month, the local Rijeka carnival was reported by news site Javno to have attracted as many as 100,000 visitors.
